Ok, after reading EVERYTHING I can get my hands on I decided to do a fishless cycle on my new 75 gallon tank. Before starting I ran an AquaClear 110 on my cycled 29 for 3 weeks. Also added some floss to the Emperor 280 for the same time and added it to the new Eheim filter on the new tank with the 110 and added clear ammonia to bring it up to 4 PPM. Did that daily. After only a day or so I had both nitrites and nitrates. Cool! After a week or so the ammonia comes down to 0 in less than 12 hours. The problem I'm having is that the Nitrites only come down to .5 or so. Nitrates are of course very high. I tried going a day without adding any ammonia but the nitrites still won't come down to 0. I've been stuck in this same cycle for a week now. I'm not concerned with the time but the fact that there has been no progress in getting the nitrites to 0. If you have any suggestions I'd really appreciate it as I've gone over all instructions I can find and as far as I can tell I should wait til they are 0. Should I just keep up the same for longer?
Really appreciate any comments or suggestions as I want this to be right before adding any fish. Time is not a problem, I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong!
