View Full Version : Flourite under gravel OK?
Hello to all you that are well rooted in this hobby! :p
I have a jet black gravel that I want to add to my tank, but I would like to add a layer of Flourite first so here is my plan: 1" of flourite on top of my existing substrate with 1" of the new black gravel over the Flourite.
Would the Flourite still be effective as a superior planting medium?

Sure... It will help! Lots of people go 100% with the Flourite and Onyx Sand. A mix is better than none at all. :)
But do be aware that layered substrates do not maintain their integrity in planted tanks. It does not take much moving and replanting for what was layered to become well-mixed.

to keep substrates in layers, you could use gravel guards. however, this would not fair well in a planted aquaria to my knowledge...
I tried this once - flourite on the bottom and sand on top. As RTR said, it ends up getting mixed together at some point....probably quicker than you'd expect.
I currently have a dual layer substrate (see specs below) that has been very stable. I propose to put a mix of fine and medium grade gravel which is #0 and #1 grade (1/8" and 1/4") on top of the previous substrate. I think (hope) it will remain stable.
Good luck to you Matak - that will be a new thing for planted tanks.

I have a dual layer as well , Latrite with sand over and gravel over that,. All in all I actually get very little mixing. At least it doesn't show!
