Carbon and Peat

I just started using peat for my 10g planted. I have a German ram and several Tetras so i figured they would like the acidic/soft water. I dont particularly like the brownish colour the peat leaves though.

If i put carbon back in to remove the colour, would it remove the tannins and humic acid introduced by the peat? I've also noticed some odour coming from the tank of late since i took the carbon out.

I need to put some in for a few days to get rid of some meds that are in the tank but thats about it. Should i keep it in there WITH the peat all the time?

I myself have kept peat and carbon in the system at the same time. Didn't seem to effect what the peat was supposed to do. It did help remove the brownish color and alittle with that "earthy" smell.

:OT: On a side note, peat is not usally the best thing to help lower the pH level. It will help for alittle while but as soon as the peat wears off then the pH will jump right back up. This in itself is very stressful for the fish. There are better ways to help lower the pH and keep it stable. You may want to start a new thread and get some ideas. RO/Tap water mix is usally the best way to go.
