I have two 15" longnose gars in my 405 gallon tank. I have had them maybe 5 months and they have grown about 2 inches since then.

I have read in the wild they get to like 6 feet. But what could I expect them to reach in a tank the size of mine? My tank is not overstocked either so there is lots of room.

Will they really get much bigger in captivity?

(This is just an example pic)

Google "stunting"- that rather painfull and life shortening fate is the only reason why your gars won't also hit 6 feet.

i wish there was not short nose gars but short gars.... i wish they stayed at 2 feet or less....very nice fish

The tank is 96Lx48Hx30W. I am not trying to get them to six feet. I just know in the wild they get that big. So I am curious if anyone else has some in a big tank and how big they eventually get?

Well, look up stunting as suguested earlier. If they are capable of getting 6 feet, and you keep them in a too small tank, they will become stunted. Of course fish only grow to the size of thier tank. But that does not mean they are healthy. Stunting involes a long, drawn out, and horrific death over time. Ultimatly its your choice to keep them, but I would either invest in a proper sized tank, or get rid of them for something you have the capacity to take long term care into consideration.

Do you have any idea where I can get some? Mine just starved to death after 6 years....and now I cant find any more...

Here's a couple of pics I took of these gars at the Mystic Aquarium in CT. I'm not really good at judging size, but I'd say these guys were AT LEAST 4ft long...at LEAST !

Beautiful fish, but not sure your tank is really big enough for them.....
