Sponge filter from UGF parts

It can be done, right? Just a matter of hooking up the pump to the airline w/airstone in an uplift tube with a sponge on the end, right?

If Im right, how big of a sponge would be needed for a 5 gallon bowfront tank?
 
Hmm, I think I'll take the silence as an affirmative answer and just try it. Im thinking a block of foam about 2" x 3" x 2". Enough?
 
Maybe cut some slots in the bottom of the tube to allow some draw from the sides, and a ring of sealant where the tube is set into the sponge?
 
Would aquarium safe silicone work?
