Ok folks, are ya ready for this?? I have heard from 2 different reputable sources that walmart is going to be doing away with layaway as of Dec 19th. RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!! WTF??? I can't get on the website bc of the firewall here at work but this is really upsetting to me. How stupid is it to get rid of it right before christmas? And it's not like it costs them money, on the contrary you would figure that they make a profit from it bc if someone fails to finish paying for an item before their time is up, they get to keep all previous payments. As soon as I get to a computer that I can get to their website, I am going to be sending them a letter. Hmmm....maybe I will just snail mail it.

Hmmmm....Not sure about this one...I know Walmart clears out their layaway area around Christmas time, so therefore all items need to be taken off of layaway about a week or 2 before Christmas. Maybe that's what it's about? I'm curious too though :)

Straight from the horses mouth-It's a permanent change--

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (Sept. 14, 2006) – Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. said today that, because of declining use and increasing costs, the company will phase out its layaway program as it expands other financing options. Customers will have until November 19 to place items in layaway for this Christmas season and merchandise must be picked up by December 8.

“Demand for layaway service has declined steadily as consumers turn to other options, such as online shopping, gift cards and no-cost credit alternatives,” said Pat Curran, executive vice president, store operations, Wal-Mart Stores Division. “To assist our customers, we are offering one last opportunity to use layaway service this Christmas season.”

At the same time, Wal-Mart is working to offer customers new payment options. The company already has zero interest offers for 6 and 12 months for current Wal-Mart cardholders. For the first time, customers who apply for a new Discover or Wal-Mart Credit Card will receive $20 cash back when they apply at the register and purchase at least $100 on their card the same day.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates Wal-Mart Stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and SAM’S CLUB locations in the United States. Internationally, the company operates in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea and the United Kingdom. The company’s securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges under the symbol WMT. More information about Wal-Mart can be found by visiting www.walmartfacts.com. Online merchandise sales are available at www.walmart.com

I just called our Walmart, and sure enough - it's true :rant2: This is going to put a real bind in our Christmas shopping for the kids :( It wouldn't have been so bad if they would have announced it a little earlier to give more time to save up...I know the manager here is NOT happy about it and he said he hasn't heard many people that are. Maybe if enough people contact Corporate office, they'll change their minds

Son of a !!!! Just called mine too. That just sucks BIG TIME!! Well, I guess I'll definately have to get up in the middle of the night, after Thanksgiving, to afford things this year. ARGHHHH!!!!

Yes, it is true, I have known it was coming for a while because I have a friend who is a manager at Walmart. He said it is because they have about for example 200 people that put something on layaway and then only 50 people come back and pick them up. They claim they are losing money that way. I don't get that because all they have to do is put it back on the shelf and someone else buys it.

You have to get your layaway in by November 19th and according to what your last name begins with, that is what determines what date yours is due out. Our last name begins with a G and ours is due out by the 5th of December. Everything has to be out of layaway by the 8th of December. I think that maybe Walmart has struck a deal with Discover or something that they get an incentive when someone uses a credit card to purchase stuff they normally would put on layaway. This will force a lot of people that depend upon layaway for high priced item, Christmas, school shopping etc... to get a credit card and use it instead. I also heard that they are going to use the layaway area for stuff that people order online. They will have it shipped to the Walmart closest to you and then you have to go and pick it up.

It costs money to pay PEOPLE to work in lawaway, items are taken off the shelf , then if someone chooses not to buy it, BEFORE they have to pay, theylost MONEy right there. So it costs money.

Yes, but, they make the money off of the merchandise once it goes back on the floor. Walmart does not lose much money, trust me.

Thank you :) I know they definitely don't lose money - they wouldn't be in the top richest people then (The Walton's that is). They also make a LOT of money on their insurance income. Their benefit packages are junk and they are expensive. Our best friend works for Sam's Club...and has been there for years - she knows the insides of that company and has been to Bentonville many times for meetings.
