My buddies Oscar may have HITH...help needed...

I've personally never dealt with HITH so I know nothing about it. i have heard it is very difficult or impossible to treat.

So...a little info for you. They are juvies. About 3 to 4" I believe. They are in a 40G for now(I know I've told him the tank size that will be required in the near future). He also doesn't have any water test kits so I have no clue what the parameters are. Yes I've told him to go get a kit several times.

So can anybody help me out here?
 
From what I've heard, you can't cure HITH but it can be managed. The fish can even go on to live a long life if the HITH is managed well. Your friend would have to be VERY diligent in keeping the tank in close to pristine condition for the disease to be managed, though. From what you've already posted about your friend (you telling him to get a water kit several times and he hasn't), he may not be willing to do what needs to be done to manage this disease. Maybe I'm wrong and he is, but either way it must be done for the fish to survive.

Thanks. After talking to him today he seems to be more into doing what is required to get the fish healthy. I think I've talked him into weekly water changes and for sure getting a kit.
