Do airstones for UG filters need to be replaced?

The only reason they would need to be replaced is if they were damaged, or gummed up with various crud. If they are gummed up, you can try soaking them in vinegar and giving them a scrub.
actually they catch a lot of flack but if done right they are very good biological filters. particularly a rfug

I run a UGF on my 5 and 10 gallon tanks and they work great!! My larger tanks all have bio-wheels but for smaller tanks I love a UGF. If properly maintained they work wonderfully!! Just my two cents.
Yes they do need to be replaced..From my experience, if you leave them on for a long time without chaning them, your airpump is going to burn out and not work anymore...
A lot of people talk smack about UGF but I use them..As a matter of fact, many of the local fish store in my area use them for many of their tanks..So that tells you a lot about an undergravel filter...
But yea, I dont use the air stones thou, a power head with a UGF is some awesome filteration..

With such a small tank, you should stick with the airstone and air pump..A power head, can be used with a UGF..It is a lot powerful in drawing water which makes the UGF more effcient..

However, I have no doubt that they would be excellent filters if properly maintained, I just prefer other filtration methods.
