My dwarf gourami has been picking at some of my plants and then taking small pieces up to the surface. I think he may be trying to build a nest and I know they like to make the bubble nest at the surface on a plant. Any suggestions on a good surface plant for him to use? Thanks

The gourami might like hornwort, limnophila or cabomba because they all have fine needles and grow quite dense at the surface if the're not pruned regularly. The hornwort will be happy just floating. I don't know much about gouramies though.
Something I have done in the past since I have some tall driftwood was to attach a big ol ball of java moss near the top of the driftwood. Seemed like the fish loved the java moss.
