My gallon has 1 female betta, and 1 snail. So far no plants, but going to be adding some as well as some large rocks. Can I put in more fish, and which kind? Some of the sites I'm looking at give conflicting info on what to add with bettas. If I can I would like to add either a school of cardinal tetras or some guppies. Like I said some sites said it was ok to add these, so said no way. Is my tank big enough to add either one of these?

The reason why they say it depends, is that it depends on the betta--some are mean to other fish in the tank, while others will get allong with some small fish. You could try say 5 small tetra. I wouldn't put a guppy with a long flowing tail fin, as the betta will probably nip it.

Whatever fish that you decide to put in, make sure that you have a plan in case your betta doesn't accept them. That way you aren't trying to do it in a hurry while your betta beats up its tankmates.

I had a female that killed snails she was so aggressive. I had another female that was extremely docile. It really does depend on the betta and their personalities can vary so much that you don't know until you try.

Good luck!

Luckily, I have another 10gal that I planed on stocking, so if the Betta doesn't like the tetra's I'm going to let them stay in the other tank. She never bothers the snail, but when I tried to mover her over to another tank when her old tank was saturated in ammonia she freaked during the acclimation process, whenever a goldfish swam by. I figured I'd take twice as to acclimate the fish to see if the Betta has any reaction to it.
