ok guys, i was at work tonight and this lady come walking in asking for a few fish. she wanted a few platy's and a few mollies. so i bag the fish up for her and hand them to her and at this point she starts telling her friend that they are going in her unheated tank... i turned around to her and was like, these are tropical fish and need a heater to have a constant water temp. she then starts jumping down my throat telling me that she has been keeping tropical fish for a year and has not had a heater.

Well, assuming her house doesn't get too cold, most mollies and platies can handle as low as the mid 60's range, and the variegated platy even the low 60's. Most swords can take it as low as the upper 60"s. So it is possible to keep them without heaters, assuming she is not dipping down too low at night. If she is older and likes her house as hot as my wife's grandmother, than her house is in the upper 80's... ;)

You were right. Nothing you can do though, so dont let it get you down. Mabey in the future you can ask more about the setup before bagging the fish, but I honestly have lied about my setup to get a fish I knew they wouldnt sell me. (a DP for a 10 gal with guppies)

ok guys, thanks. i just wanted to make sure i was not giving out some bad info. funny thing is, i know how we always bag on pet store workers and how a lot of them dont know anything about selling fish, well its just hard to believe how many people there are out there buying fish that just have no idea. had someone the other night buying a 10G starter set and just couldnt understand why they couldnt put fish in it the same night. another one wanted to put a bala in a 5G tank... just amazes me sometimes.

This probably depends very much on the specific situation. I don't use any heater at the moment, because the one that came with the aquarium is crap (keeps the temperature at 84 when set to 79 and at 82 when set to 71). Without heater, it's 80 in the evening and 78 in the morning, which sounds okay to me.
