Oh ICK!!! Can't help you there. Not real good at identiying them. In our place I'd call them the 'squished' species of jumping spiders. lol. *shudder*

nice thread, bettagurl. I had a "pet" black widow in my garage that I named "Cassandra". I watched her grow to a huge size, her abdomen was all big (about 3/4 inch in diameter) and shiny. She also laid several egg cases. One day, I decided to clean house for her and vacuum up her old webs that were all littered with dead, wrapped up bugs. Well, I guess I went too far and she got offended and left :( I was so sad to lose her.

I really think she helped keep the bug and spider population in my garage down, because after she was gone, I got tons of little spiders and daddy-long-legs everywhere. Come back to me, Cassandra!

well, not that i don't like spiders, but whenever i find one, it goes straight to my toad or betta, depending on the size of the spider.

Why'd he get mad? It's not like the spider invenomated the puffer or made it sick or anything.

are those wild spiders? I fear the mother may eat them...

bettagurl
10-04-2006, 3:39 PM
yep, they are wild, although they live in my window,im not sure if she will eat them, the other egg sack hasnt hatched yet.the type of spider she is is the easiest to breed,i used to breed orbed weavers because there werent many left but after releasing hundreds the neighbourhood is full of them.i caught the parents from the wild and bred them, the eggs take about a year to hatch.

there's no way that creepy crawlies like that would make it into my house. I have the worst arachnophobia, whenever I see one in real life, I do the whole cat on the ceiling thing. I'm the same way with roaches, and here in vegas we get japanese fighting beetles too...snakes, lizards, rats, hamsters, guineau pigs, rabbits, turtles, toads = all okay, spiders = a black/ red smudge

i cant find words to describe what i would do if there was a big cricket on my back.i think im going to be sick, yes,im horribly creeped out.i went in my basment once during the night to check my fish tank(i heard something crash)and i stepped onto a peice bread(only god knows how it got there)and as you may know crickets love bread.there was about five large crickets,i think this type is called 'camel back crickets'.they scare me more that a normale cricket.

10-04-2006, 5:21 PM
yea,i get freaked out quite a bit around here, the biggest camek back cricket i've seen was about this long -------------.thats the one my brother threw on me,some neighbores actually came out to make sure someone hadnt been murdered.

fishcatch22
10-04-2006, 5:26 PM

10-04-2006, 5:55 PM
i used to have a toad,he or she was about 3 " it live in a 55 gal terrarium with 4 anoles.i wish i had kept that tank,i wasnt interested in fish when i got rid of the tank for $30.i feel like an idiot. :duh:

fishcatch22
10-04-2006, 5:58 PM
I don't think you can keep anoles with a toad... a regular southern toad that you caught outside? fire bellied toads aren't really related too closely with bufonid toads... they're more aquatic and their skin is less warty.

i love mole crickets! yes, strange, i do know but i do! i once had a fascination with spiders, although that quickly died out. and those camel backs, dont' bother me cuz they don't live long enough to do so. in miami, (my hometown woot 305!) there are these huge yellow, green, red, and black grasshoppers that are about 3-4 inches longl. those creeped me out, but this past summer i had no real problem with them.

I have enjoyed looking at the spiders that everyone is posting though - and I don't believe I have ever seen one " as big as a coaster " so if anyone has taken a pic of one of them I'd like to see it lol

Those durn crickets are the one thing in the entire world that really creep me out bigtime. I'm not afraid of much--what's to fear?--except those things. They are ugly, disgusting, creepy, nasty, ad infinitum. Cleaned out a friend's laundry room one time--it was FULL of them. I was jazzin for hours after than, jumping at everything. Ah, the things we do for friends. :sim:

Speaking of crickets, if you can't get rid of them, you can use them to tell the temperature. If you count the number of chirps in 15 seconds and add 40, you get the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, this implies that if the temperatures dips below 40ºF, the crickets will not chirp and you're on your own as far as telling the temp.

As for pet spiders, when I was a kid, I used to watch a family of spiders on my window sill. I would watch them catch flies and make nests. It facinated me to see the little ones hatch and fill the web until they went their merry way. I don't think I ever named them.

Also, in NW Florida where I grew up, those large garden spiders spun their nests between trees. We used to ride our motorcycles in the woods and it was quite a surprise to have one plant right in your face as you came around a corner and didn't see it. Imagine jumping off of a traveling motorcycle while ripping your helmet off and shrieking like a little school girl.
