I currently have a cichlid tank set up and I would like to put some rocks that I have from my cottage in the tank. These rocks are black and some have a white line through them. They look like granite but they have a metallic look to them. After you hold one in your hand you get this very fine, shinny dust left. Any idea what type of rock this is and do you think it's safe for the tank???

Could be coal? but i think that would turn you water black...

It sounds like a cool rock, but the fact that particles are left on your hand afterward doesn't make me think its ok to use it. I have used many rocks and stones I found in different places, and they never caused problems. But I would be careful, its possible the rock can 'break down' in your tank. I cant tell you for sure, but just use common sense in this one.

Why not get a photo of one, but it sounds like Coal. If it is then its totally unsuitable for a tank.

Lava Rock or Rainbow rock is a usable rock for tanks as its inert

To get some idea of how it will be in your tank you could try soaking the rock in a bucket. Then you can see if there is any break down. I recommend doing this over a week or two's time, though to be sure.
