I recentley bought a 100 watt Top Fin heater for my 30 gallon tank. The heater is on the lowest setting but i keep have to unplug it because it wont shut off. I heats the tank past 80 degrees, does anyone know anythign about this, thanks

it's called "defective". Bring it back to the store you bought it from and tell them of the problem. The heater should not be constantly on, I would say the thermastat is busted on it.

I had the same thing happen with a Marineland heater. It turned out that my heater was defective from the manufacturer. Most likely that is what is wrong with yours.

Sorry, someone else posted while I was typing.

wht type of thermometer are you using? where is it placed in the tank? could be gettin false readings, and maybe the heater is working correctly. also if ur tank is in the path of the AC it could keep lowering your tank temp causing the heater to be always on. last thing, hav u felt the water itself (is the water hot) or are u goin by the heater light always being on?

I already threw out the package and receipt, will petsmart still take it back?

That's strange... My petsmart will take back items without receipts. Maybe i just gave them a good reason to take my heater back?

if it within the warranty, which i think is a few months, they dont have a choice, but even outside of that range, your recipt would be expired.

Without a receipt, how do you prove it's within warranty? I know, you should always keep receipts for everything until the warranty runs out, packaging too... But who does that? Where would you keep it all if you did?

That's why I just use the 'technique' described above.

even if its outside the purchase time, they usually give your refund in the form of a gift card. definately try it out or buy another TopFin heater, replace, and return. i would try out the gift card option first and then use it to buy Marineland's Visi-Therm heaters, they are great.
