I know I have seen other posts on this subject but I am still confused. I only have a 3 gal Eclipse for a betta that I am trying to cycle. I bought Walmart brand ammonia and was halfway through cycling (ammonia going to 0 in 12 hours, nitrites high) when I discovered a problem with the ammonia. The label says, "ammonium hydroxide and Surfactant". I now know that surfactant is soap. I have actually seen posts online that people have used Walmart ammonia to cycle so I am not sure what the deal is. I shook the bottle and there are no bubbles but from what I understand it takes very little soap to kill a fish so I am afraid to risk it.So I have ordered new bio wheel and when it arrives I will clean everything up and start over again.
Today I bought Albertson's brand "Simply Clean" ammonia which does not list the ingredients except for saying that it contains ammonia and doesn't contain phophorus. I'm not sure if that means there is nothing in it but ammonia or not??? It doesn't bubble when shaken either.
Anyway, can anyone tell me what kind of ammonia they used (preferably that I can find in CA) so I know one that is tried and true instead of playing this guessing game? I am new to this fish thing and I think I have become overly attached to my betta so I am very stressed out about doing the right thing and not killing him! I know, people act like it's just a betta but a pet is a pet to me. I have already spent a couple of hundred dollars on this $3 fish so I guess that makes me a real nutcase! ;o)
Thanks,
MaryAlice
