Hi everyone! "It all started with a $3.00 one gallon aquarium at a garage sale." As you all know, one cannot live with just a measly one gallon, sooooo I brought up the 29 gallon tank from the basement that I had been storing for years (when I was into goldfish). Then this past weekend, I was in a resale store, and to make a long story short, ended up with a 4'X12"X18" tank. (If anyone knows how many gallons that would be, please let me know.) So I've been deligently cleaning my new tank, and it appears that someone went all out with this tank and when it got dirty, decided to get rid of it! As I had never heard of 'cycling' before, this will be a new experience for me. I currently have: 4 male fancy guppies, 1 female fancy guppy, about 13 or so baby guppies as of this past weekend, and three clown loaches. This forum is so informative and everyone is so friendly, I just had to stop in to say "Hi!" :hi: Kathy

Hello Cathy and Welcome to AC! :hi: It sounds like your tank is a 55 gallon im not positive though. There are calculators on the web that will convert area to gallons if you want to search for one.
Welcome back to the hobby.

Hi Kathy! Were you born under the Pisces sign, or did you just write that for fishies in general? Because I'm a Pisces, as is fish_freak. Actually, I made a poll about that in General ChitChat and the overwhelming majority of folks who answered were indeed born under the sign of the fish :D Kinda neat, huh?

you need more female guppies...the males will start fighting over her, until only one male is left and then they will pester the female until she dies...speaking from experience don't mean to scare you...I started with 5 males and 8 females, down to 1 male, 3 females...

44.88 gallons and will weigh around 438 pounds when full!

To get gallons, multiply Length x Width x Depth ( 10368 ) and divide by 231. That comes out to about 44 gallons. A 55 Gallon is usually about 13" wide, ( 48 x 13 x 20 ).

There are lots of fish clubs in Michigan- several in metro Detroit, and a bunch more spread throughout the state. You should see if there's one near you, and check out a show or auction.

'Tanks' for the warm welcome you guys! Yep, I actually am a Pisces, born on St. Patrick's Day. My full name is Kathleen, but friends call me Kathy. I also own a business on a lake, so I guess I'm meant to be close to water! And yeah, it is really neat that most of us are Pisces. :) I'm sure that you're right about the female guppies, cause the males are always after her. But if I get more females, won't I end up with a bunch more babies? If I do get more females, what is the procedure to quarantine them? I've never done that before and don't want my other fish to be affected by introducing a new fish.

yes, Kathy, you're right that more females will also mean more babies. It's probably best to separate the genders if you don't want any more babies.

As for quarantining, see this article

Hmmm, born in Detroit on 3/17, raised East side? Pretty close to the same here...

Born in Royal Oak (Beaumont Hospital) and raised in Warren.

Oh yeah, but the birthdays are different... I was born on 3/16.

Still in all, pretty close match...

Only other big difference is, nobody calls me Kathy... ;)

I always wanted my birthday to be on St.Patrick's day because it's such a great party day (plus I'm part Irish), but my birthday is 1 week before...

Welcome Kathy, another Pisces!!!

Hey CaptnDan - I was born at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital (does it even still stand?) and was raised in Centerline - so we were neighbors! I went to Warren Lincoln H.S., graduated in 1970. Had I not been born on St. Patrick's day, my parents were going to named me Penny  Think you'd like to be called Penny? hahahaha

And thanks Ms. Bubbles for the welcome. :girl:
