View Full Version : Five Gallon Hex - Stocking & Cycling

So I have this give gallon hex, planted, housing three juvenile apple snails. They'll be given away shortly. I had a plan to put a few guppies in there, then decided against it since they'd breed so fast. So now, it's just sitting there with the plants and the snails and I'm kinda at a loss at what to do with it. I'm not so interested in livebearers and so can anyone else suggest a small fish that will do fine? It's got a piece of driftwood keeping the water soft in it, if that helps. I already have a betta, too, by the way.

I was also wondering if the tank is considered cycled? Snails can't cycle a tank can they? And some pieces of the plants decay(some stuff I can't cut at and count on the snails to eat) and so amonia must be being produced, right?

Edit: As for dwarf puffers, I'm starting a project for the ten gallon beside my computer for those fish already, so that's out for the five gallon too.

Look into some of the killiefish species. There is many that stay an inch or under that would look nice in your five gallon. Another possibility is endlers livebearers but again you may run into a lot of fry with them.

They'll do alright in a 5 gallon though? When I looked up fish around the same size as a betta(seeing as people slap those suckers in 5 gallons all the time) it always suggested 10 gallons. Is this simply because they need more swimming space?

As for killis', thanks, I'll check it out. :)
