So I posted this on Friday in the general FW forum, and a bajillion people have looked at it but nobody has replied...I am very worried about the little guy, and don't want to medicate him for something he doesn't have...the Petsmart people were no help. If anybody has any ideas or advice I'd really appreciate it! Here it is:

Just noticed this on my betta today- still active and eating. Is this a fungus of some sort? Never seen it before....
The picture isn't the best, but he's a dark red crowntail and several of his fins have long, cottony-looking white strings hanging from them.
Any suggestions on medications?
He is in a newer bigger container as of Monday- no other critters to bother him. He seemed much more active and happier since then....maybe not? Other than that, nothing has changed

What are your water parameters? When you say a larger container do you mean a heated, filtered tank?? Contrary to popular belief bettas really do need a heated, filtered tank in order to be healthy.

I can't really tell from the pic what is going on, it's a little too blurry. Could it be fin rot?!? If I were you I would first test my water and post those results here. Without knowing those numbers the best advice I can give you is do lots and lots of waterchanges!! If it is fin rot it can be cleared up 99% of the time with CLEAN water and TLC. You can also add a little bit of MelaFix with each water change, I have never used it but have heard great things about repairing damaged fins with it. Good luck!!!

Bitsy-
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, he is not in a filtered tank at this point in time. He was an impulse buy- I rescued him from the stupid WalMart where he didn't have enough water to even remain upright in. I figured he was better off in a bowl then in there. So he was in a 2 gallon bowl, and I just moved him to a 4.5 gallon bowl this week. I do eventually want to get a tank for him, but I will be moving soon and wanted to wait and get a 10 gallon after the move and when I have room for it. I have done two water changes of 10% each since Thursday, and I am going to take my water into the LFS today to find out the water parameters and I will post them ASAP. Thanks!

10% isn't much of a water change. Try 50%, and of course dechlorinate if you are on "city" water.

Update

He is cured! I took the water to the LFS and the water parameters were fine. Did 10% water changes every other day, he was fine by the beginning of the week. The guy at the LFS also said that it was common to see something like that in crowntails that have been moved due to stress, and that it usually resolved. They recommended more water changes instead of medication, which made me like the LFS more :-)
He's going to be moved into a 10 gallon as soon as it's cycled. Thanks for all your help!
