I would not do one oscar in a standard 55. Upon reaching full size, they will have very little room from front to back of the aquarium.

in my opinion, a single oscar needs at least 75 gallons and even that will be a squeeze. remember that oscars grow to 13 inches or so. two oscars and you're looking at 120 gallons.

oscars are pretty quick growers, but still, you may stunt them if they are not in a big enough tank, and then still its easier to start out with the tank that they are going to need when they are adults because then you wont have to keep buying new ones.

But you want to be ready in case your oscar does reach 14 inches. Its better to have too much tank space than not enough with oscars. Especially with the bioload they create!

get some discus fish or a bunch of africian cichlids... maybe some yellow labs, something not too big.
some of the more aggressive cichlids tend to get a bit large for a 55 gallon. I only have 1 convict in my 55 gallon. When I got him... he was an 1inch and half, now he's like 4 inches in only a few months.
some cichlids grow very fast. do your research

Unless I mis-understand the question(s), the OP is asking (1) if it would be okay to keep 2 Oscars in a 55 and (2) if not, what other fish could go with a single Oscar.
Are you really suggesting to put discus or African cichlids with a single Oscar?

If not oscars what about a red devil i know they grow to about the same size but would they be better than an oscar or not or would they need more space again

My male red devil absolutely dwarfed my adult tiger Oscar.
The O is 12" and my devil was 14" and had alot larger girth.
They were in different tanks obviously but if you think a 55 is too small for a Oscar, its WAY too small for a adult red devil.

Alot of people keep Severums or Jack Dempsey's with their Oscar's.
Silver dollars make good dithers too if you want some of those.

I went to a lfs and they had two oscars that someone had been keeping in a 55g, and the clerk showed me how they'd worn blisters on their noses and that the cramping had deformed the mouth on one of the oscars.

I had an oscar in my 55 until it was 12'' then it went to a friends 125 with a dempsey. Definitely needs more than a 55.

I have some pics, not sure if I can get them to work on this site.
I'll give it a try.
I've kept regular, tiger and red oscars.
They are all pretty much the same except for the colours.
There are also albino and veil tail variations I've seen.
The veil tail's have really elongated finnage.

Might I sugest a Jack Dempsey or 2. Maybe 1 Jack and a TX Cichlid. Jacks get 8 to 10 Inches and they will eat feeders.
My Tx Cichlid loved feeders and they are slow growers I think they also reach 10 inches.
You also can do 1 Convict and 1 Jack Dempsey. Cons are 2 small to eat feaders but they are agressive fish.
