Thought I'd make a poll about this. I had a thought today that maybe everyone would be interested in an article about Graduate school, research, and science. It would be mostly general interest, to give everyone an idea of how life is for working scientists. There would also be some specific info about grad school and how to apply, get funding, etc. Because I know there are quite a few people on AC who either want to go to school for science, or are currently undergrads studying science who might want to go on to grad school for it.

Of course, most of it would be biased toward my experiences (because that's what I know best), but I will also make an attempt to keep it general where appropriate.

Some of the topics covered would be: Life as a Graduate Student, How to Prepare/Apply, The Scientific Method and "Doing Science", The Sociology of Science, and Why do Scientists Lack Common Sense? :D I've thought about this last one a lot, and have seen it happen to me.

Whaddya think? Any suggestions are also welcome :)

If you voted no, a reason why would interest me, if you're willing to share.

yes please, that would be swell.

I'll give a yes. I might get to make a comment on better ways to cram for the tests. (4 yr nuke physics in 18 months).

Go for it Paula!

ouch, that sounds painful! I'd be glad to have your comment on that. I personally try to avoid cramming at all costs! Too stressful and too little retention, if you ask me :D So I wouldn't have many cramming pointers.

No, you have 6 YES'S!! But you knew I'd say that though. LOL
I was wondering when you'd chime in! I actually had you as one of the folks in mind when I got the idea :)

well plah, I hate to be the only one to oppose this article but I do. I think it's a great idea and many people might find it helpful but I just don't see the significance of having that type of article on this board. I can't honestly see that someone who is looking for that kind of info is going to actively seek it out on a fish board, rather than going to the college sites or course sites... that sort of thing. I hate to be the opposing voice and perhps I'm playing devil's advocate, who knows... I just don't agree with it here.

I voted yes, but I think you'd be more specific. You're majoring in marine biology, right?

I think since this is a fish board, if you did something on Marine Biology, it'd be fine, but otherwise I'd say no....

DD, that's exactly what I thought would be the main objection. I was thinking about that, too, on my way home. More than anything, it was to give folks an insight into my experiences and let them know where I'm coming from. Obviously, folks who want to apply will have many options available to them (not only on the web but also their school's Career Center). But it was for people who are already on this board and might be interested. It will be geared toward biology, with also a comparison between fish keeping by ichthyologists and hobbyists at home.

Perhaps a sticky in General ChitChat?
