A fluorescent striplight brown. I am trying to create a blackwater look without using all those extracts and crap. What type of paint if you can?

Are you talking about painting the fluorescent tube itself? If so, I'd say don't do it.

It's much easier to get a real blackwater tank going by putting in some of the heavy driftwood from Drs. Foster and Smith or Petsolutions. I've got two huge pieces in my big tank, and the water always has that blackwater look from the tannins leaching into the water. I do a 15% weekly water change, and it still never gets 100% clear of the dark stuff.

if you have glass tops it would be easier to tint that.

go to a hobby store and get some colored translucent vinyl

Paints are going to use opaque pigment which will drastically reduce your light output. As somebody else said, try and figure a way to apply tint to the hood. That should affect your light output far less.

I am going for a dimmed amber light actually. I just want to make sure its not flammable or dangerous or anything.

When you say huge would that be the large from Dr Foster's?

It would be easier to set up a peat moss pail or garbage can for change-water. And you'd be creating conditions that the fish would appreciate.
