I have a small tank before and I put several types of fish in with different colors . What happened was some fish would try to dominate the softer and gentler fish and the worst others ate other fishes. This got me discourage and I stop opearating a fish tank.

"operating a fish tank". i like that!!! im gonna have to use that.

all fish have different compatibility requirements. theres fish that are "aggressive" some "semi-aggressive" and some "peaceful". some fish are alot more territorial than others so they dont like intruders and retaliate as a response. its best to pick which fish you like the most and work around that one for tank mates. dont give up yet. once you get the hang of it, it can be very rewarding!!

People tend to forget, we are not talking about domesticated animals when we talk about fish. A fish that eats other fish is not being "mean". It is doing what comes naturally to it. There is no malice involved.

Oscars living with guppies will eat the guppies. This is not because the Oscar is a bad fish, it's a hunter. It's doing what comes naturally. The person who tries to keep guppies with an Oscar, however, is a bad fishkeeper. (Though the Oscar may feel differently LOL)

When we stock a tank, we have to be mindful of the natural instincts and needs of the fish we are putting together. Most of the time, we are combinig fish in a way that would never happen in nature.

Researching the fish in advance is the best way to go and will make things much more enjoyable.
