A question for all you experienced fish keepers here at AC.
which cichlids make the best parents and which cichlids fall way behind in the parental stakes.
Your input is much appreciated because i would love to try breeding cichlids and knowing this information will make my journey into the unkown a lot easier.
Many thanks.

Angels are reputed to be among the worst due to massive inbreeding and the fact that many angelfish have their eggs artificially reared (and thus poor parental instincts are passed down generation to generation).
Cons are probably the best parents. Like Discus, they secrete a nutritious body slime for their fry, but they also literally will beat up on Piranhas, Oscars, etc., during brooding times.
I definitely have to agree with Childawg, Convicts are my choice for best parents as well. They will beat up fish 4-5 times there own size while breeding and protecting fry.

For best parents, Beani are notorious for their extreme parental care. Often they won't allow other fish in their tank regardless of tank size (atleast up to 500g-600g I've heard).
