Sand question....

Hello all,

As some of you may know i am setting up a Brackish water tank in a couple of months, anyway my question is: How do you siphon through the sand without sucking it out?

I siphon right above the sand. Some areas I will poke a lil bit. I mix the sand a few minutes before hand and stir things up. When it settles I will beegin to siphon.
 
I was always worried about that as well, but you really only lose a very small amount even if you clean the sand every time you do a water change....I always pictured it all being sucked up into the gravel cleaner, and out of the tank..... but it just doesnt for whatever reason.
