I have a 29 gallon aquarium with a Penguin Bio-Wheel 350 on it. I have been considering getting some dwarf gouramis and think that this filter may cause too much surface disruption for them. I was thinking of replacing it with an AquaClear filter. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

H3D-

Got that filter on my 29 community tank that has my dwarves in it, no problems.

They seem to stay below the plant level mostly, but will come up to the top.

Thank you for the comment aardvark1, but I would still like to get a filter with a lower flow rate.

if you are planning on having more than one, surface agitation might be best. this will deter them from making bubble nests and declaring territories. IMO a 29 gallon is too small for more than one. once they establish territories they really guard them and one will become dominant and beat up on the others till they eventually die. if you really want more than one, keep the agitation and get lots of plants or hiding spots.

If you want to keep aggrivation down, rearrange the plants and/or rocks when you clean the tank. They can't get too territorial that way as it keeps changing!

My dwarf gourami "surfs" the current from my Ehiem 2215. It is a powerful current, but he will play in it and through it.

Thanks for the comment sarcare. The Penguin Bio-Wheel 350 has twice the flow rate of Ehiem 2215 though. However I Think it is the design of the Penguin filter more than anything that makes it cause so much surface disturbance. I have replaced it with an AquaClear 70 and so far so good.
