I know some people who have bare bottom tanks that don't like the look of the waste on the bare glass. Tonight as I was getting ready to do a water change on my 31 gallon platy tank, I put a maxi-jet 900 powerhead (230 gph)as close as I could to the bottom on the left side. This is much easier than going in with a net and scooping the waste out (the tank sits on the floor and is hard to syphon). Now the waste gets swept around in the current and picked up by the filter. For the length of this tank (32 inches) I wouldn't want a stronger powerhead. The flow is plenty enough to keep the bottom debris free from one side to the other.
