Are there any plants small enough to put in a 1.5 to 3 gal tank without having it take up the entire space? I am thinking of putting one in with one Betta.

How does putting a plant in affect a cycled tank? Do they carry diseases that can affect fish? Anything else I should be aware of before adding a live plant?

Thank You,

cryptocoryne, hair grass, Algae balls.

The only thing that a plant canbring in is snails! The eggs hitch a ride on the plant, nice snacks for the betta though;)

You could put in some anubias or java fern. They'll grow slowly under low light. Also Java moss might work, it looks nice attached to a rock.

Plants can carry in parasites in the water they come in, especially if they are kept in tanks with fish. But you can disinfect them by soaking them for a short time in a bleach solution say 1 part bleach to 20 parts water for a min or two.

Plants don't adversely impact the chemestry of an already cycled tank--they help absorb some harmful elements in your water.

I'd say an anubias nana - I have one in my 2 gallon betta tank. It's pretty slow growing (and stays pretty small), hasn't required any fertilization thus far, and the betta really likes it. It also has no special light requirements - I've actually left the light off in that tank for days at a time and the anubias never suffered. There is a picture in my tanks link if you want to see what it looks like!
