Just bought these yesterday........looking great so far I think.

There's 11 in total:

3 Electric Yellow's

3 other yellow guys (LFS said "Saulosi's)

5 blue guys (LFS said "Kenyi's)

(LFS guy didn't seem to sure of himself) Hence, can someone confirm or deny the names of these fish??? thanks !

looks like that's what they are to me...

the bright yellow fish with the black dorsal = electric yellows(Labidochromis Caeruleus)
the yellow/orange fish = Psuedotropheus saulosi(males will turn blue with black stripes)
the blues = kenyi(Psuedotropheus lombardoi)(males turn gold)

how gradual is the change from yellow to blue/black in the male saulosis ?? and when does it happen??

the saulosis are just over an inch right now

I didn't see any that looked like kennyi's, either. That's probably good, because IME dominant male kennyis will hound and kill any other yellow fish. This is particularly a problem when mixing kennyis and yellow labs, because the labs are relatively wimpy as africans go.

BTW, good for you for passing on the loaches. A smart choice, IMO!

I agree with Jim. Besides, it looks like you've got great colour for that tank anyway! :)

yeah, those blues look more like Pseudotropheus Socolofi(pindani) the more I look at them...and they are beautiful cichlids, indeed.

How big is the tank you put them in? By the way, great fish!

I don't think they're socolofi. Maybe it's just the ones around here, but they're usually darker and sometimes have a hint of purple in them. I can't tell what those are. I'd hope they are socolofi though. They'd wipe the gravel with your labs! Well, maybe not in a tank that size. Keep an eye on things. I'll try and figure out what those are. Usually kennyis have much more prominent, purple vertical stripes.

I must admit though, the pictures make the blue ones look a LOT more turquoise than they do in person......my dad even swears that they are PURPLE...not blue. So I dunno....it's weird though, the camera didn't really change the colors of the yellow guys.

ALSO---look at this pic: click here (http://www.stjinks.com/viewer.php?picture=/album/13/13-22.jpg)

do you think the bottom one is a MALE...and has started to change colors?? with the one on top probably being a female??

The Kenyi's have triangular stirpes. Their stripe is not wide enough. The socolofi's normally have black marking on thier fins. These do not. Thier face is not flat enough to be any psedeutroupheous. :)

Any ideas as to what they might be then? Hard to really tell with them being so young...maybe haven't developed their adult colors yet. Anyone else with an educated guess? possibly a haplochromis or another labidochromis sp.(horseface)?

actually they do have black markings on their fins.........the pictures just don't show it

if they are socolofis.....hmmmmm.....those are a peaceful species aren't they? I might run into some trouble then, with the electric yellows and saulosis??

If they are socolofi, which I still don't think they are, the saulousi should be able to hold their own but watch the caeruleus and make sure they're not getting wailed on. Scholar's right though. They don't have the right face to be a Pseudo. They almost have some form of Aulonocara face, but I really don't think they're peacocks. Could be a hybrid.

Them are some nice looking fish. The black sand makes them stand out even more. I like the tank a lot. I looked at all the pics and liked how the slate and rock was set up into tiers. I asked Jinks about that sand in another thread.

Looking good,

Dave

Thanks Dave!

Jinks and I particularly fond of your 4" JD!!

The slate/basalt rockwork in the African's tank has changed a bit......and the pictures don't quite do it justice. The water has also cleared a lot more since those photos were taken. I'll put some more current ones up soon! :)

Thanks!!!:) (Blushing) I have some new pics that I'll be posting soon. I have a female also, but she is not as colorful or photographic. She always hides when the camerea comes out.

If that is cloudy, then I would love to see it when it is clear. I'm thinking about going with black sand in my Malawi Cichild tank because of the photos. When the wife asks why I'm changing it I'm going to blame it on you.:p :D

the pictures with the new Africans = clear water
the pictures where you can really see the rockwork = cloudy :)
