Hi all,

I am starting out two new tanks and plan to have both with live plants. I have the following questions:
(1) I plan to use Eco Complete as the substrate. But is it necessary to put a layer of peat at the bottom before putting the Eco Complete?
(2) Could I put fine gravel on top of the Eco Complete? I would like to something other than black at the bottom. But I'm wondering when I vacuum the gravel if it would mix up the gravel and the eco complete and mess up the look (I guess it depends on how thick the gravel layer is, right)
(3) At what point of the cycling could I start putting in the plants? I have been referring to some sites that said for a planted aquarium a fishless cycle is unnecessary... got me a bit confused.

Thank you all in advance.

you can use eco complete without peat if you want..a layer of fine gravel is usually recommended with eco complete too.

yes if you vac you will mix the gravel and eco.

and if you use plants..the cycle is different..the plants will use ammonia

Personally, I like the eco-complete by itself in my planted tanks. I think it looks nicer that way. It is really up to you and the look you are going for.
