Multies are harem breeders, and they can "service" 6-8 females easily. As the fry grow, they can live together in multi-generational colonies. Most catfish love fry, so you have to be careful. Bushy nose plecs would be your best bet - hardy, small and will leave the fry alone. Thats why you often see bushy noses sold at cichlid breeder sites. We always have bushy noses at my cichlid club auctions. Here is another good site to check out .http://www.cichlidrecipe.com/shellweb/

Is your 30 gallon tank 36" long or is it really a 29 gallon (30" long). I had a large group of multis (8-12 adults and swarms of fry) that would attack my rubberlip pleco (chaestoma sp.) in swarms. You could hear the sound of them hitting/bitting the pleco across the living room. I removed the pleco because it was simply being terrified. In a 36" long tank, with shells on one side, a no man's land in the middle and caves for the pleco to hide in on the other it might just work. In the 29, the entire bottom was the property of my multis...
