should the black rocks stay or go? I thought they added nice contrast to the substrate while helping tie the black background to the front, but if it looks tacky i'll ditch it.

If the dwarf. sag looks rough it's because it's new and It was my first time planting an aquatic plant. I crushed them a little bit.

I was going to put a windeloc fern between the 3 rocks and a java fern on the far right. I was also going to put 2 Anubias nana "petite" on the biggest rock and one on the front rock on the right side of the tank. any thought?
I was also going to scatter Weeping moss on thee rocks. What easy foreground plant should I use? The substrate is shultz. I have two 15 watt screw in PC's over it, but the tank looks dark. I think i'll use two 20 watt bulbs. I'm not going to use Co2, but I'm going to use flourish and flourish excel.

It looks like your well on your way to having a great tank. I'm not really sure about the rocks. They are kind of distracting to the eye and if your don't want them to be your "centerpiece" I'd think it best to remove them. I'm a begginer myself at aquascaping so I can't give you much help on where to place the plants. :thud: How about HC for a foreground plant? Or mabye riccia or glosso, but those two seem harder to take care of from what I hear. Are you sure the flourish and flourish excel are going to be enough, since you are planning on putting in higher lights? Anyways, the tank has lots of potential so keep on that path and it will be great. :dance2:

very nice i like it! A hardscape with a bit of green! the little hairgrass(?) on the right side was a nice touch.

I think adding some black rock does help with the contrast, but the ones you added dont really go with the overall scape, it's all rough and ridged but the black rock are smooth pebbles, replace with it something more rough? but same color.

I broke down guys. I'm bought a hagen c02 system.
That's sag. subulata on the right. I think i'll cover the black rocks with riccia and move them further back towards the Sag. subulata.

I hope the utricularia on the rocks does well!

Since I'm using co2 now, I wont use excel. Do I need anything besides flourish? I want to have breeding cherry shrimp in this tank and about 7 neons.

I'd take out the black rocks, and add something similar in texture to the other rocks but a different color--not that dark. I'd also consider adding some plants in a different color--a darker green or a red. Red temple is nice, I have some sunset hygro that is a light pink and green. The anubias will look nice--a good color texture contrast.

I'm going to go up to 5 watts per gallon, so red plants should work. Theres a plant I like that sounds like Redneck, but that's not it :-)

If anyone has any extra to trade/sell, let me know!

I do auctually have a red crypt in there between the three rocks :-) Would glosso grow in such coarse substrate?

That is the latin name for red temple Altheria Reneckii (sp Rosefollia) There is some in my 55g, towards the middle--the link to the picture is in my signature.

Rotala and ludwiga are other good choices for reds. Red crypt can get big under higher light. Glosso might work, but it seems like kind of a hassle--I prefer babys tears--it forms a nice bush.

I'd recommend ditching the grey rocks. Other then that, it looks great, especially with some red shrimp in there! :thm:
