I'm thinking about getting a 3" silver arowana... will it be small enough for a 30 gallon tank long enough for me to get a 150 gallon tank set up and cycled?
thanks,
georgio

How long will it be before you get a 150, though?

Yeah, that's about a month. But a 150 will still be pretty small for it.

According to the AC forums the minimum is 135 gallons... I thought it would be roomy if it was 150. It shouldnt take me that long to get the 150 gallon, and cycling takes about 2 weeks? hmmm

That tank will house him for months.I wouldnt even put him it a 150 for almost 6mo to a year they dont feel comfotable in a huge tank while they are small.Do your self a favor now get him hooked on trout pellets crush them if you have to but will save you a fourtune and you will have a way heathyer fish they like tetra reptomin (turtle food)for now dried blood worms.
BTW now would be the time to add more if you ever wanted to.

my silver reached 42" in 5 years and lived in a 450gallon tank with just two rays on the bottom. i would recommend 180 gallons as the ABSOLUTE minimum. i had mine for 7 years and it never got past the 42" mark in the last two years of owning it.

I'd say for an aro, the biggest concern is tank surface area, more than absolute gallonage - a tall, skinny tank (like the porportions of a 55g) would not be as good as a long, flat tank (like porportions of a 20L) even if the taller tank held more gallons. They are big fish, and need lots of room to swim around in - personally, I'd want a tank with more space front-back than any mass-produced tank I've ever seen. Something like 6'x3' or more, but that would mean custom-building.
