I know they are brackish water fishes from what I read all over the internet..But a small minority of people have kept these catfishes in freshwater for a long time..Like I know one person who bought them as babies and now are 10-11 inches long..And that person kept them in freshwater only..Any experience with keeping these fishes in just freshwater? And please no links on internet sites describing this fish because it probably is going to say, it is brackish and when it turns to an adult it needs more salt..

I won't give any links but the bottom line is if you want the fish to be healthy then it needs salt. It sounds like you know what the requirements are but you want someone to tell you it will be ok even though it won't.

I know but there is a small minority of people who raised healthy adults and had them in only fresh..I am just trying to find them..I for one know that they are brackish because one time when I was curious, I asked the LFS employee about them, and he said fresh and they died in 4 days or so in my freshwater tank..

though mine WILL be making the switch into Brackish, and then eventually in a salt tank, he HAS BEEN doing fine for a 1 1/2 in freshwater.

i'm not telling you to keep it in fresh, but so far mine is extremely healthy, and extremely active. BUT, like i said, he has plans for bigger and better (and saltier) things

each fish has there own personality. lots of people say they eat smaller fish too... but in his last tank he was with neon tetras AND ghost shrimp, and didnt bother any of them.

the biggest thing i'd like to know, is what size tank your housing him in?

Can I ask how long you had him in fresh only?

The fungus was probably because of being in freshwater..I am still debating if I should do it or not..2 years is a long time..

My opinion is I strongly advise against this. If you know what the fish needs in order to be healthy, why try otherwise. It's probably been done in freshwater with these guys but I can guarantee you it's rare and I highly doubt they lived to their max age. Although a fish can survive in the tank, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is happy or healthy and since you have seen all over the web that people advise against it and instruct that they do grow to need more salt as they mature, the best thing to do is to follow such advice. This is such a beautiful fish and one that unfortunately often suffers at the freshwater demise.
