Hello all,
I got a 10G tank from a friend but it has no hood and filter. Would you suggest me to get a eclipse hood, or a canopy with a HOB filter? I plan to make it a planted tank (low-light plants) and have dwarf puffers in it. Thanks

Canopy and HOB filter. =)
Isn't that cheaper?

I suggest a canopy and a HOB filter as if the all in one hood quits, you will probably have to replace the whole hood. That is like $50-100.

Thanks for replies. I was thinking the eclipse hood has filter and light and I would have to spend close to the same amount on a canopy with light fixture and a HOB. What is the maximum watt of light I could put in in a eclipse? (I guess it is eclipse 1, the one for standard 10G)
Another factor would be the bio-wheel. Is it bad for plants?
I'd also be thinking of the canopy and hob filter route. The eclipse hood is made for a 15 watt flourescent. I'd personally go with an aquaclear 20, but having a small bio wheel filter on the aquarium won't hurt the plants unless maybe your trying to inject co2. Well for low light plants I'll assume no co2 LOL. The eclipse hoods do look good, but the real issue with them is that if you decide you don't like one thing then your pretty much stuck. I mean if you don't like the filter then what do you do?

I have an eclipse 1 on my 10 gal and an eclipse 3 on a 20 gal long and I think they do a pretty good job with filtering and growing low tech plants. Parts are also replaceable so you don't have to scrap the whole thing if either the filter or light breaks down. If you are going to grow more light hungry plants with CO2 then you probably should look at a different set up.

Replacement parts are easily had on Marineland's website. No need to scrap an entire Eclipse for want of a plastic light transparency or a lamp ballast.
On the topic of which, I'd go with the canopy and HOB filter myself, though my two Eclipse 3's are giving me great service.
