Hi,

Just bought a plastic drum , planning to make it into a canister like filter for my 120 gallon tank. my problem is , it sbeen used to store shampoo , i think? still smells like shampoo , even though i've used soap and water to clean it. it doesn't bubble and is not slippery, but the smell is still there. any advice on how to get rid of the smell?
also will it be ok to use if there's smell?

also about the design, what should be the output tube? should it be the top or buttom?
planning to use 3/4 inch pipe as intake pipe and a 1 inch pipe for the out.

should the intake be the top or buttom pipe?
going to use filter floss, bio balls and some sponge as media.

hot to get rid of shampoo smell?
heres the drum

Keep it filled with water, and perhaps any chemicals will leech back into the water..... Could try a little bleach in there as well.

What type of material is it? Commercial polyethylenes of all sort (regualr, high density, or crosslinked) will leach the originally stored chemicals into water over a long period of time.

Fragrances take very little to go a long way, so as a rough guide, if you can smell it, there are still traces of shampoo coming out of the plastic.

This type of container (also taking into account what was stored in it) would be my second-to-last choice for storing potable water for emergency purposes. Your best bet is to go with a virgin plastic container.
