Ok I have a 20 gallon tank that I plan on setting up fairly soon.
Now my mon wants to get some african cichlids because she saw the electric yellow and a electric blue cichlids in a nice tank at the hospital earlier this week. Well I know that I can't have cichlids in a 20 gallon tank. My mom really liked the bright colors of the cichlids. So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some nicely colored fish that would do well in a 20 gallon. I want something other than the usually tetras, platies, swordtails and mollies. Are there any colorful brackish water fish? Thanks for the help in advance :D

German Rams are cool looking and quite colorfull. You could keep 3-4 in that tank easily. They are very sensitive to water conditions though so they are a bit of work to keep them healthy. Some of the Killiefish are quite colorfull like the golden wonder but these guys tend to be quite small like 1.5" range and it sounds like your looking for something a bit bigger. Another fish you may want to check out is the dawrf cocktoo cichlid. Pretty cool fish. Most of the rift lake shell dwellers would do ok in that size tank as well.

A pair of African jewel fish ( Hemichromis sp. ) would be pretty colorful. I've got H. lifilli and they're bright red with blue spangles. They are intolerant of other tankmates when they're spawning, though.

You can find a lot of killifish photos at:

The colors of the males will knock your socks off! The females might as well be female guppies.

You usually get them through the mail or from a local auction. Stores rarely carry any.

Some rosy barbs would be nice, or a pair of pearl gouramis. Just don't mix the barbs with the gouramis!

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I was thinking of getting some shell dwellers but I don't know where to get them.
