Which online resources do you recommend?

Don't look for sites to tell you what size of a tank to put a fish in, rather look for how large the fish get from people who've raised them for a long time, and then consider what space and tank mates they need.

For instance, clown loaches get quite large. They use the bottom levels of the tank. And they need other clowns to keep them happy and healthy. All of these factors together indicate that you need a LARGE tank to house them for life.

as with anything there are different opinions and as a result there can be a lot of conflicting information.

as notes.. base your decision on your research. a 20 is fine for many species and will meet their requirements.

each species of fish has different requirements. in some cases the requirements overlap with other species and they may be compatible in the same environment you set up.

going to larger aquariums gives you more options and tend to be a bit more stable
