I currently have a 90 gallon "tall" and am looking on removing a few filters and replacing them with one larger filter. Here is what I have:

Fluval 304
AC 300
Emperor 280
UG with 2 powerheads

inhabitants:

4 - 5" silver dollars, 1 - 8" bala shark, 1 - 12" ropefish, 2 - 1" black skirt tetras, 1 - 4" pleco (don't ask me what kind - but he has not grown more than an inch in the past year)

I want to keep the Fluval but remove the rest.

What are your suggestions. My future plans may be to turn this into a planted tank with discus but that may be a year down the road. I have had the current set-up running without a hitch for the past 5 years but I want to eliminate as much of the piping and noise as possible.

if you like ur fluval i would suggest picking up a 404, u can get them for around $75 or cheaper even. i run dual 404's on my 75 and boy does my water sparkle!!!

I don't mind the fluval but I was thinking about adding a RENA Filstar XP3. I noticed that they have disposible cartridges. Has anyone ever adapted a reusable filter for these?

i personally dont see the purpose of disposal cartridges.... i mean youre just wasting time trying to grow the nice bacterias.
if you dont mind id say pick up an Eheim then use fluval as your mechanical filter and eheim as your bio-filter as eheim has more room for filterating media

I was not wanting to buy it for the disposible cartridges. I hate disposible. I just want a decent size filter that will give me excellent clarity. I find that my fluval is okay for that but I am looking for something better.

A bag of filter floss on the bottom basket of a fluval can work some wonders with water clarity . . .
