ok... I have a friend with a cube with coral and fish and snails..... his tank all of a sudden got loaded with bubble algae (and a BIG GIANT one in the back, where he didn't notice). Is there a way to remove them WITHOUT using that crab? And he can't put his hand underwater, because he can risk touching the coral...

What is it an octocoral? If he doesn't want to use an emerald crab his only option is manual removal. I wouldn't do that in the main tank if he/she accidently pops one it will spread everywhere. I'd remove to a bucket of salt water remove rinse with water from a clean bucket than add back to the main set up.
