I'm thinking about building a corner tank and was wondering what you guys think about this idea to save some money. I want to make it 48" high, 60" across the diagonal. I'm planning on using 1" think plexi for the front but only quarter inch for the rest with a wood backing right up against the plexi. Actually between the wood and plexi would be a background. I want the tank to sit on the floor so the same idea would be used for the bottom.

Is this a recipe for disaster or do you think its safe?
What about the front is 1" okay?

Weighing in a little over 2000 lbs is this to much not to be in a basement?

Don't worry. If it's too much, it will move to the basement all on its own :).

It probably depends on the house.

I spoke to a contractor (relative) about my 110 on a larger foot print. he suggested shoring up the floor under and around the footprint of my tank.

your tank will have a smaller footprint and consquently will put more pressure on the joists in the floor.''I am guessing this is not on a ground floor(concrete pad)?

you could also build a frame for it and share part of the wt with studs in the wall.
(I would still add extra supports to the floor)

disaster waiting to happen. 48" high will put tremendous pressure on the acrylic, i dont even know if 1" is thick enough.

ive heard of a guy that bought a 3m x 1m x1m (120"x40"x40") and the side panels were 40mm thick about 1.5inches.

Yeah I'm worried 1" still isn't thick enough. I can't find any information on how to actually calculate the pressure put on the glass/plexi. Horizontal boards across the front pane might help. Hmmmm

Pressure only depends on the height of the water column, which makes it easy to calculate. If you are used to metric systems, you can just do it in your head. Otherwise, use this (http://www.gazza.co.nz/waterpressure.html) :).
