Is a 50 gallon 36-18-17 tank big enough for one tiger oscar for life?

I agree... Oscars get big and only 36" long tank isnt gonna cut it.

I'd say that'd work, gallonage isn't as important as dimensions.
BUT, that'd be the minium tank size. You probably wouldn't be able to get any more fish, and you'd have to make sure to keep up on your water changes and maintenance. Overfiltration would help too.

that is one inch taller than a 40 breeder. for a fish that should end up at a foot at least, i would not consider a 3 foot tank sufficient. if nothing else he could stay in there until a more acceptable tank is saved up for and set up.

you can do it. but the goal should always be to help the fish thrive, not just live. and that tank will let it live, but not thrive.

you have a good point....BUT the gallons are not so important as the dimensions of the tank, with this dimensions one oscar can live happy. and not every oscar get to 13" most stay in 11"

an 11inch oscar would be fine in my tank, but a 16inch oscar of course wouldnt, in that case ill find him a new home. but oscars rarely reach 16inches, usually staying about 11-13.

maybe most oscars dont get that big because they arent in big enough tanks or cared for properly. it isnt good to base what is acceptable on the horrible conditions most oscars end up in. and i was focusing on the dimensions, not the gallonage. he probably wont get to be 16" because in that tank he will most likely be stunted. the difference in 11" and 13" is effectively none. in my opinion and experience, that tank is fine until that oscar is about 8".

your oscar wont reach 16", trust me it wont, oscar that get to 16" is because they have space enough to reach that size, but if not, they will reach as bare minimun 11" but they just usually get to no longer than 13", anyway give it a try! oooo and dont forget the pics! lol :D

Yea cause i would love to live in a space that is only 2/3 longer than my own body and smack my face off a wall every time i try to do a lap around my cube.

i would agree, a 50 would not be a comfortable llife for an oscor. remember, they are messy fish, and big fish, the fact that they can regularly grow to 14 in. if the tanks is the proper size, should say enough that a oscor that max's out at 11 is not in the right size tank, and has been stunted. oscors are buetiful, persobnable fish. they should really be kept in a large tank with some freinds, or as a mated pair.

I TOTALLY disagree. My Oscars were practically the same width of the 55 gallon when I had them in there. a 75 gallon would be the way to go. I have them in a 225 now and they have reached their maxium length of 15 inches.
