I'm seriously considering upgrading the filtration on my two 20 gallon tanks from Whisper 40i internal filters to Eheim Ecco 2232 canisters. The Whispers do an okay job of it, but they take a up a lot of space in the tank in addition to a few other issues. I don't want HOB on these tanks since they are nearly flush to a wall. I'm also thinking of upgrading lighting and planting these tanks, and I think filter upgrade is the first step toward that goal.
Anyway, these will be my first canister filters. I have a few questions.
Are these filters as silent as they claim? The tanks are in my bedroom.
Anyone know the dimensions on the 2232 canister? I can't find them anywhere online. Maybe I'm having a moment, but I can't even find a product site for the Eheims.
Will it be able to pump from the floor up to the tank? I have a distance of 4' from the floor to the rim of the tank.
Hmmm...that's all for now, but I might have some more questions a bit later!

Hmmm...okay I did find the eheim site...I must have been spelling it wrong. Doh! It looks like Eheim Classic 2213 may be more in line with my needs if I'm doing the metric conversion correctly and assuming "Del.head approx Hmax" is the distance the canister can pump to the tank.
My attraction to the Ecco was that it does biological filtration as well as mechanical/chemical. Is this also the case for the Classic?
Does the set-up as sold in the box come with everything I need to set the filter up?
I could just stick my old filter media and bio sponge right in the canister, correct?

Wel, i can't remark on your specific model, but i recently purchased a Eheim Pro II 2128 thermo filter from www.drsfostersmith.com (father-in-law works for them, yeah employee discount) and i am extreamly happy with it so far. It's darn near silent (the wisper filter on my 20 gallon is WAY louder) easy to set up and seams very well built. Right now it's running on my 30 gallon to get "pre-seeded" but next week its moveing to my new tank.
I know this isnt exactly what you were looking for, but i hope it helps at least a little,

Hey, can I use his discount, LOL. We're distant cousins, right? ;)
I have a coupon for Petsmart and can get 2 of the Eheim Classic 2213s for $67 each (shipping included). I haven't found anywhere cheaper. I just wish Petsmart carried the 24" black All-Glass Versa hoods I wanted to get as well.

I have two eheim classic 2215 on my cichlid tank and in the last four years that this tank has been up and running I have been very pleased with them. Yes, they are absolutely as quiet as everyone claims. I mean actually they are silent if you keep the water level high enough. I also have this on my discus tank and the discus are really happy with this filter. This is the perfect filter to have on a tank in your room because they are so quiet and very efficient. You can put whatever media you need in them so you can run it for the biological needs as well. I really like these filters and I think they are some of the best filters on the market today.
