I bought a bunch of base rock for my 55 last night and one of the employees at the store said something to me, and i'd like ot verify its validity. I've been planning on doing about a 50/50 mix of base rock and liverock. I got almost 40 lbs of base rock last night. The guy told me that I shouldn't buy too much or plan on keeping it forever, because base rock is not as porous as live rock, and won't harbour as much bacteria which might cause nitrate problems in the future. Now, I thought base rock was just dried up, dead liverock? Is what this guy said a valid concern? It drives me nuts because this place has really nice stock and good selection, but they'll tell you anything to sell you something, whether you need it or not.

I believe whats important is what type of rock it is. if its the same type of rock as the live then no worries. :thm:

There are even different types of live rock out there where some are more porous than others. Such as Fiji and marshial islands for example. Fiji is almost no where as porous as Marshial Islands, but what is one of the most common rocks that are sold in just about every fish store? Fiji rock.
