My jag cichlid is laying eggs.Last week My jag dug out about five pounds of rock away from a hollow piece of drift wood to the bare glass. I noticed she had something clear/white coming out of the reproduction area and increased agression. Then next thing you know eggs everywhere in the driftwood and on the glass underneath. I have a question the tank is 120 gallons and the tank mates are serevum JD GT which fish is most likley the one that bred with the jag? She is showing the least agression twards the JD any comments or suggestions would be helpful. I know they will hatch in 5 days or so and become free floating in 5-8 more days. What should I expect? Will the mate fertilize the eggs? Any responses would help. There is also 2 plecos which seem to be trying to get in the log also but the jag is having no part in that by chasing them off every time they get close.

they may not get fertilized at all. she may just be confused. I would get her a mate:)

It will be one interesting fish if they are fertilized though

my JD seems to chase the others away too. I guess it would be a cool breed jd/jag mix I dont have room for a jag mate so kind of hoping the jd fertlizes the eggs but if not will she lay eggs again and if so how often? Also I stuck my hand in the tank earlier and she tried to attack it im sure that is normal. I have another question maybe I should start a new thread but should I do water changes during this time?

no i wouldnt do water changes, dont worry. and keep them just for you, dont release them or sell them, it is no good for the hobby to have more hybrids ;) but anyway you should keep one, i feel curious about the look of a jag/jd

I agree its fine to keep them for your self just be responsible with them. The problem lies when the offspring breed with one of the same species of parent. All the fry will ussually take on the charecteristics of the dominant species and look like them but will really be untrue geneticly.

I was not trying to breed them it just happened I guess I will have to wait and see if the eggs get fertilized and hatch. I do not like the fact that this happened but am very curious I probabally will keep one for my self but plan to destroy the rest if anything happens. Thanks for your replies.

edit: what species would you say is dominant?

I still can't understand why people say don't release a fish "into the hobby". Its not like these random hybrids are going to takeover every aquarium and destroy what was once a perfectly harmonious and pure bred ecosystem. I am interested to enjoy the beauty of all fish, not just the ones with perfect blood lines. Thats like saying a mixed dog has no use in the world.

If the fish have babies naturally (without hormonal assistance), then they shouldn't be destroyed just because the parents don't have the same scientific name.

I know these eggs probably aren't even fertilized, but I had to say something becuase I'm so tired of hearing the same line from people who apparently know everything about fish and genetic histories.

i understand your point, im not against you by the way, its just that, theres already aloooooooooot of hybrids going around, and we dont know, but anyway i would like to have any of this fish, cause i think the color morph and the looking of the fish cause i feel very curious about them...lol
