Cycling Planted Tank

I read somewhere that you can cycle a tank using plants if you have a MANY plants.

If i want to cycle my tank but dont want a large amount of plants, should i begin my cycle with plants, or slowly add them after tank is cycled?

I have a 29gal and plan to have a hand full of stem plants and a few carpet plan ts.

A few posters also said they dont use co2, and that with the right amount of light, weekly water changes and ferts you can get by. Is this true?
