I've got a question for GT owners. I bought mine when it was about 2 inches. At the same time, my JD was about 2 inches as well. From the time I bought it about 2 months ago, the GT has grown about half an inch, while the JD has grown to almost 4 inches. Is this slow growth typical for GT's? I thought these two cichlids grew at about the same rate. Is it possible that one of them is producing the slow growth hormone? Thanks for your help!

Everything I have been told is that GT's have a very slow growth rate. Mine is growing at about the same rate as yours is.

Thanks for the feedback! I was hoping they'd both stay around the same size, but I guess thats not going to happen. It seems like it won't be a full 8-9 inches for at least a year. I wonder if they have occasional growth spurts? How big is your GT?

strange, I had my GT in a tank with Dempseys. He was the smallest fish. He ate the most and when he was the same size he started bulling all the fish and ate almost double what the other fish at. He got so big I had to move him to my 90gal and he is now my largest fish. 9 inches. I think he is just over 2 years old.

I also bought my gt at the same time as my dempsey and the dempsey has outgrown him in the same amount of time. I would have to say they grow slower
although mine hasn't out grown him that much the JD has grown 3-4 inches while the gt has grown 2 1/2 inches in about five months.

I wish mine had grown 1.5 inches since late August. Thats about what my other two fish have done, but the GT has only grown about half an inch since late July. I'm thinking about contacting the Balco people and see if they can help me with some quick growth! lol

they are slow growing, but they are exceptions,i have had aloot of wild gts, and they have different growth rates, its normal, it depends also in how much the fish eat.
