hi all,
Are Keyhole Cichlids relatively easy to sex and breed? They will be in a 180l with a butterfly fish a couple of emporer tetras, a red tailed shark and a couple of pictus cats.

Thanks Flag

They are releativly easy to breed. They have even been known to openly breed in a community aquarium. You will most likely have to get six or seven juvinille fish to start with and watch them till a pair forms. Once you have your pair remove the rest and sell the back to the LFS. They are open breeders and ussually deposit up to 300 eggs on a stone. Both parents will watch over the eggs. They tend to eat there first couple of broods so dont be suprised if this happens. They may terrorize any of the other fish that try to come near there territroy once they spawn.

Keyholes are not easy to sex..until they get old enough to spawn (18 months old or older) then they say the males develop longer fin tips(past the tail)

as mentioned it is best to get a few keyholes if you want to get a breeding pair..almost impossible to sex henjuvenile..they will form a pair when they get to sexual maturity.

I have 3 in a large tank..almost 1 year..I can't tell them apart tho they appear to be forming a pair..maybe
