Midwestern US natives fishes

neat! Thanks for sharing. How'd y'all catch the fishies?

What's the third one, some kind of goby? The first one (Clupeid or Cyprinid?) is pretty. The sucker (Catastomid) is cute too.

Thanks. We caught them with seines. The third fish down is a Rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum. Relative to walleye and perch just smaller.

ah, yes! I'm a Pacific coast gal, so don't know too much out east of me :D

That explains the goby comment. All of these fish came from freshwater. You have some neat stuff out west but not quite the diversity we have in the Midwest. We're lucky to have so many native fish suitable for the home aquaria swimming right between our toes.

What kind of fish is the sixth one down. It almost looks like a discus. I am from Ohio and have never really paid much attention to the native fish here.

Pretty close. It's a look alike, longear sunfish.

I'll find a pic of a longear in full color. I should add that the rainbow darter is in winter color. In the spring these will get colorful.

the second picture from the top is a round goby. invasive species to the great lakes.
