hey all, in case you don't know, i'm goijng to be coming on quite a bit of money this coming summer, and i'm mulling over I deas what to do with it. well, i've always wanted a bichir, and I was thinking i cloud do a senegalensus in a 55G, I then I thought, why not do a whole community? I was thinking about congos for tankmates. well, I want to know, would a full grown senegal bichir be able to eat a full grown congo tetra? do I only have room for the senegal? if yes it would be able to eat them and no i do have room for more than just a bichir, what other fish would be good? climbing perches? cichlids?know of any african plants other than anubias?

c'mon, i know there are people here who can answer these questions.

You can probably keep 2-3 smaller species of bichirs like the senegal in a 55. I haven't tried it myself but I think the Congo tetras might do ok with the senegals. Leopard Ctenopomas are great tankmates for bichirs since they don't bother each other and they get big enough so the bichirs can't eat them. You can also maybe have some african butterflies to inhabit the top layer. Also if you have the space and money, ditch the 55 and go with a 75 instead.

that 55G is already gonna eat every dime I get out of that, 75G is out of the question due to lack of space and money. also, I only do tank bred fish. if it's from the wild, it ain't going in my tank. I understand that most other bichirs are wild caught, same with ctenopomas and butterfiles. also, any other plants you can think of from africa other than anubias?

senegals are farmed nowadays so the likelihood that you'll find a wild caught senegal is almost next to none. there are other species that are being farmed now also like the ornate, delhezi, and endlicheri bichirs. leopard ctenopomas i think are also farmed bred now also.

as for plants Anne has a big list of it and you can find it here http://aquaticpredators.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3852

I know they are, i said most other bichirs, as in other than senegals. hmmmm.... how big do those ctenopomas get? I hear they are pretty territorial, so i can only get one, correct? also, do you have any non-forum links? you must be a member to see that link.

oops sorry about the link didn't know you have to be a member to see it. i think it's been posted here somewhere before. if you do a forum search it might show up.

leopard ctenopomas get to be around 5-6 inches. I have two in my 20 gal right now and they get along fine. one just displays his dominance once in a while but nothing too aggressive.

hmmm....well, congo tetras get around 4". do you think a full grown 12" senegal would be able to fit a 4" fish in it's mouth? if not, I guess i'll try the ctenopoma. and I tried a search here, no dice. got any other links?

well, my mother loves congo tetras, so i'll try them. i'm pretty sure they won't fit.nice list. i'll compose a nice tank form the plants there. thanks for your help! anyone else have any input?
