i have 2 fancy goldfish and was wondering what other type of fish can i put with them. The tank is 40gallon with a heater at 75F.

you won't be able to keep any tropicals in with them. Tropicals and goldies have such different needs that if one is satisfied, the other suffers. 2 fancies in a 40 gallon though seems ok. You can add a school of white clouds to add diversity but they might wind up as snacks as the goldfish grow.

I'm going to move this over to the coldwater section so the folks over there can help. The knowledge is more directed at these types of questions.

First off, goldfish are coldwater fish. This means that under most household conditions (someone please find an accurate figure) they will be fine without a heater.
Second, if they are two fancy goldfish, I'm willing to bet they are gonna need a bigger tank. I have heard that an individual goldfish needs at minimum 30 gallons.
Third, your title indicates that youmay be considering adding "tropical" fish to your aquarium. In addition to this being possibly overstocked, you also need to remember that coldwater fish and tropical fish do not mix.
Fourth, you have not mentioned your filtration in this tank. This is a vitally important priority, as goldfish are known for their large amounts of bioload.
Fifth, how long has the tank been running and what is your maintanance?

Good luck, Black wolf.

I think you have enough in there with the goldfish. don't get anything else. tropicals can be kept with goldfish, but it is best for goldfish to live in species tanks.

heaters should be in place with fancy goldie tanks to keep the tank temps from fluctuating too much. The temp should be set at no higher than 74F.

I still believe 40 is fine for 2 fancies.... but is at the minumum

Uhh... has anyone heard of my incredible success story with two goldies in a 29g? You can definetly put a few White Clouds in there, but I wouldn't. They'd end up getting eaten.

IMO, sunfish would outgrow that tank, too. Plus sunfish tend to be pretty messy eaters, so in that way need even more tank space.
